A Visit That Strengthened Our Mission: Reflections on Dr. John Sandford-Smith’s Fifth Working Visit

Over the years, Tamale Eye Hospital has been privileged to build strong relationships with individuals who share our commitment to improving eye care in Northern Ghana. Among these partners, Dr. John Sandford-Smith stands out not only for his expertise but for the genuine passion and humility he brings each time he walks through our doors. His recent visit, which marked his fifth working visit to our facility, was yet another remarkable chapter in this ongoing collaboration.

For two weeks, Dr. Sandford-Smith worked closely with our clinical teams, offering hands-on teaching and mentorship in the consulting rooms, the theatres, and even out in the communities. His visit included a wide range of activities:

• guiding clinicians through complex cases,
• offering one-on-one consultations,
• supporting community eye screening exercises, and
• performing surgical procedures that restored sight to people who had been waiting for relief.

Each session, whether in the clinic or in the field, reinforced the value of patient-centred care and the importance of consistency in capacity building.
