Tamale Eye Hospital Marks World Sight Day 2025 with Free Eye Screening in Bilpela

World Sight Day is observed annually to draw global attention to the challenges of blindness and visual impairment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2023), an estimated 2.2 billion people worldwide live with visual impairment, with at least 1 billion cases being preventable or unaddressed. About 90% of these cases occur in low- and middle-income countries.

WHO further reports that up to 80% of visual impairment is avoidable through prevention, treatment, and cure—highlighting the need for greater awareness and access to quality eye care services.

In line with this global call, Tamale Eye Hospital (TEH) joined the 2025 World Sight Day celebration under the theme “Love Your Eyes.”

Our Activities

To commemorate the day, TEH organized a series of outreach activities aimed at promoting eye health awareness and providing essential services to the community. These included:

  • A television campaign on Sagani TV, Tamale, to educate the public on the importance of regular eye check-ups and eye health.
  • A community eye health education session and free screening at the Rock Assemblies of God Church, Bilpela, on 3rd and 11th October 2025.

Key Outcomes

The Bilpela screening exercise recorded an encouraging turnout, with 180 individuals receiving free eye examinations.

  • 25 people diagnosed with refractive errors were given free reading glasses, kindly supported by Zera Missions Africa.
  • 30 people were diagnosed with cataracts and are scheduled to undergo free cataract surgeries at Tamale Eye Hospital on 23rd October 2025, in partnership with the Cure Blindness Program and Right To Sight And Health.

Through these efforts, TEH continues to fulfill its mission of making quality eye care accessible, available, and affordable to all—especially in underserved communities.

Our Commitment

Tamale Eye Hospital remains committed to championing eye health in Northern Ghana and beyond. By collaborating with partners and stakeholders, we aim to ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against preventable blindness.
